On April 30th, a few Longhorn journalists traveled to Norfolk for the Class B state contest. The members included Navy Havel, Miranda Spady, and Paige Nickless. Havel competed in the Feature Photography competition and secured 7th place, while the winner of that category was a student from Elkhorn. Spady and Nickless participated in the Yearbook Theme Development category, where they achieved 3rd place. The overall winner in that category was a team from Elkhorn North.
“I am beyond proud of our Chase County Journalism students for their incredible achievements at the state competition.” Chase County Yearbook Advisor Peyton Rowley stated, “Competing as a Class B school, they showed outstanding dedication and skill. Navy Havel’s 7th place in feature photography, along with Paige Nickless’ and Miranda Spady’s 3rd place in theme development, are testaments to their hard work, talent, and teamwork. These students have not only made their school proud, but they’ve also proven that with perseverance and passion, anything is possible.”
The winner of Class B was Gretna East with 326 points. In second place was West Point-Beemer with 268 points. As a team, the Longhorns ranked 23rd out of 31 teams with only three competitors. Their final score was 24 points. Overall, the 2025 State Journalism was a successful competition.
