CCS doesn’t make next cut to advance in Samsung contest

Science projects by a trio of Chase County Schools students didn’t make the list as national finalists in a Samsung-sponsored contest, but their teacher is already talking about next year.
“We’re definitely doing it next year. We’ll have a better insight next year and be more competitive,” said CCS science teacher Jennifer Gonzalez who worked with her students on the contest entry.
It was the first time CCS entered Samsung’s 10-year-old “Solve for Tomorrow” competition.
The contest’s goal is to spark student interest in STEM—science, technology, engineering and math.
CCS advanced to be one of two state finalists, and one of just 100 nationally. As a state finalist, CCS will receive a $15,000 prize package of technology equipment and classroom materials.
From those 100 entries, 20 national finalists were chosen, and announced last Thursday.
“Yes, the kids were disappointed,” Gonzalez said.
“But being a state finalist is pretty amazing. They did some great work and we still received $15,000 in equipment and materials,” she said.
Students whose projects were entered included Luis Co and Eric Gonzalez, both seventh graders, and freshman Madelynn Hanes.
Half of the prize package will be Samsung tablets and computers, she said. She and other CCS science teachers are compiling a list of what to request for the other half with a goal to get what can help the most students, she said.
