It’s harvest time. Think safety

In the dash to get the crop in, shortcuts, when it comes to safety, never pay off.

There’s probably not a harvest that calls for urgency like wheat harvest. There’s always a scramble to get as much done in a day because you never know when Mother Nature could harvest the field for you with ice.
In the dash to get the crop in, shortcuts, when it comes to safety, never pay off. That goes for farmers and non-farmers alike during this busy time.
Undoubtedly, harvest time puts lot more traffic on our county roads and local highways. Drivers need to remember that a semi grain truck can’t stop on a dime. It’s frustrating for a truck driver when someone pulls out in front of them when they’re fully loaded with grain.
Truck drivers can also avoid issues by dropping their speed down as they come in and out of town.
All too often, and not just during harvest, I see a truck blow right through a stop sign when pulling on to the highway.
I’m sure the driver had assured himself no one was coming from either direction, so why slow down. Perhaps, while in a rush, he thought he could save a minute or two by not stopping.
What if there was an oncoming vehicle in the driver’s blind spot. Would that extra minute or two been so precious then? It can happen and has happened. Lives can be changed in an instant.
If you’re one of those farmers repairing the combine, running the grain cart or driving the truck, don’t take shortcuts trying to save a little time. It’s not worth the price if things go wrong.
Think not only of yourself but others—Think Safety First!
