Sandra Sue Large was born on April 6, 1958, at Spalding, Nebraska, to LaVerne A. and Kay L. (Jenkins) Buckles.
Sandy, as she was known, grew up in Ericson where she attended school, graduating from Wheeler Central High School in Bartlett, Nebraska. Sandy continued her education at Wayne State and the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, home economics.
Sandy taught home economics at Wynot and Culbertson High Schools for nine years before marrying Kevin E. Large on Nov. 22, 1986, at Bartlett. To this union four daughters were born: Lichelle, Joslyn, Halsie, and Kerbie. The couple settled on a farm near Hayes Center and have resided there until present.
Sandy was active in Alliance Women and was an AWANA Club Leader at Hamlet Union Church, where she was a member. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and baking, and she especially loved being involved with her girls and all of their activities.
Sandy passed away Friday, July 19, 2019, at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. She was 61 years of age.
Survivors include mother Kay Buckles of Ericson; husband Kevin Large of Hayes Center; daughters Lichelle (Lance) Baar of Hoxie, Kansas, Joslyn (Jake) Nelson of Bertrand, Halsie Large of Mobile, Alabama and Kerbie Large of West Point; three grandchildren: Hakon and Rorik Nelson and Tinley Baar; sisters Linda Buckles of Ericson, Lana (Mike) Kruml of Ericson and Audrey (Cecil) Smalley of Aurora; brother Jerry Buckles of Ericson; father-in-law Marvin Large of Imperial; in-laws Joe (Myra) Large of Wauneta, Dean (Jan) Large of Wauneta, Dale (Elisa) Large of Imperial and Regina (Stuart) Pederson of Burrton, Kansas.
Sandy is preceded in death by her father, Laverne Buckles and mother-in-law Arlene Large.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 24, 2019, 10 a.m. CT at the Hamlet Union Church, Hamlet, with Rev. Stuart Pederson officiating. Inurnment followed at the Hayes Center Cemetery, Hayes Center.
A family and friends gathering for fellowship and reflection was held Tuesday evening, July 23, 5 to 7 p.m. CT at the Hamlet Union Church Hall.
A memorial has been suggested to AWANA Program of the Hamlet Union Church.
