Roland ‘Elroy’ Broughton

Roland Elroy Broughton was born June 28, 1935, in Haigler, Nebraska, to Rolland R. and Leota M. (Minor) Broughton. Elroy graduated from Chase County High School in 1953.
On Sept. 16, 1957, Elroy was inducted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska until his honorable discharge on June 17, 1959. While in Alaska, Elroy taught GED classes to fellow servicemen.
On Feb. 3, 1963, Elroy married Delitha Jane Adams in Julesburg, Colorado. The couple first settled on the family farm at Haigler. They later moved to California and Texas where Elroy was employed as a border patrol agent. After his father’s death, Elroy and Jane moved back to the Haigler area where they assisted with the farming operation.
Elroy continued his education and received his teaching certificate from Kearney State College. He then taught and coached at Champion for several years. While in the local area, Elroy was also a pivot irrigation salesman and manager.
Jane and Elroy later relocated to Sidney where they owned and operated Jane’s Jewelry for over 30 years. After retirement, the couple made both Sidney and Imperial their home.
Elroy was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was a Scout Master of the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing chess, Nebraska football and RC planes.
Elroy was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters Doris, Leah and Joan and son Steven E. Broughton.
Elroy passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 at his home in Imperial. Elroy was 85 years of age.
Survivors include his wife, Jane of Sidney and Imperial; daughters Brenda Kay Bumps (Bruce) of Chadron and Rhonda Broughton of Sidney; son Roland Broughton (Brenda Sue) of Sidney; daughter-in-law Brenda Diane Broughton; brother Donald Broughton, Phoenix, Arizona; grandchildren Blake Bump, Baron (Erin) Bump, Jeff (Danielle) Broughton, Justin (Lindsay) Broughton, Garrett (Laura) Broughton, Kathryn (Shawn) Yoder, Thomas McCallan, Melissa Broughton, Elizabeth Broughton, Roland E. Broughton III, Spencer S. Broughton and Tavin D. Broughton; eight great-grandchildren, Rhiannon and Gavin Bump, Jayce Broughton, Dylan and Ryker Broughton, Claire and Riley Broughton, Bryce Yoder, Corey Yoder and Dana Yoder.
Funeral Services for Elroy will be held Friday, Oct. 9, 2020, 10:30 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Imperial with Pastor David Kahle officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery, Imperial with full military Honors.
Visitation will be held before services at the church.
