Richard Donald Davis

Richard Donald Davis was born on March 22, 1928, in Grand Island, Nebraska, to Harry and Julia Theresa (Buhrman) Davis. Richard grew up and attended school in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island High School in 1945. After graduation, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Navy on March 1, 1946, in Hastings, and he was honorably discharged on Dec. 1, 1947, in San Diego, California.
On Aug. 16, 1950, Richard married Arlene Alberta Barker at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benkelman, where the couple settled and raised their four children: Gary, Judy, Don and Anne. Richard was employed as a mechanic for many years at Valley Farm, Inc., the local John Deere dealership.
Richard was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Benkelman, the Knights of Columbus, VFW, and the Benkelman Fire Department for 25 years including Fire Chief. He served on the Benkelman City Council, was Mayor of Benkelman and he was also a Boy Scout leader. Richard loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Richard passed away Monday April 19, 2021, at the Dundy County Hospital, Benkelman. He was 93 years of age.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Arlene.
Survivors include: sons, Gary Davis and wife, Nancy, of Max, Don Davis and wife, Shirley, of Benkelman; daughters: Judy Pfeffer and husband, Dave, of McCook, Anne Glassman and husband, Tim, of Castle Rock, Colorado; brother: Vernie Davis and wife, Shirley, of La Vista; grandchildren, Josh Davis, Justin Cumming, Austin Davis, Jessica Gibbs, Katie, Chloe and Emma Glassman; eight great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Joyce Crandon.
Mass of the Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 24, 10:30 a.m. (MT) at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Benkelman, with Father Matthew Eickhoff as celebrant. Interment followed at the Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, with full military honors.
A rosary was recited Saturday, April 24, 9:30 a.m. (MT) at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Benkelman.
Visitation was held Friday, April 23, 4-6 p.m. (MT) at the Benkelman Memorial Chapel, Benkelman.
Memorials have been suggested to the Benkelman Volunteer Fire Department, Benkelman.
