Elmer Lee Hessman 85, of Champion, Neb., was called home on June 2, 2017 at Good Samaritan in Wood River, Neb.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. on June 8 at Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial.
Graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. June 8 at Crete Community Cemetery in Champion.
Elmer Hessman was born Oct. 1, 1931 in Haigler to Anton Edward and Mary Eunice Hessman. He attended Chase County High School from 1945-1947.
He went on to complete high school at Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis, receiving his diploma in 1949. Elmer studied farming and was an avid football player.
Elmer enlisted in the Air Force on March 7, 1952 and proudly served his country as an airplane mechanic at Amarillo Air Force Base in Texas.
During his service he earned several awards including the National Defense Service Medal for his time served during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged on March 6, 1956.
Elmer was united in marriage to Dola Ann Hogsett on Nov. 18, 1961. The couple eventually settled down in Champion and had three children, Sarah, Charles and Susan.
He was a very loving and devoted husband and father.
Elmer was employed in agriculture his entire life. He loved farming and raising cattle and hogs. His hobbies were watching football, fishing, raising ducks and reading western novels. His great pride and joy were his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Spending time with them brought a smile to his face and joy to his heart.
Elmer is survived by his children Sarah A. (Randy) Dack of Grand Island, Charles E. Hessman of Champion and Susan A. (Marc Duncan) Hessman of Houston, Texas; three grandchildren, Sargent 1st Class Adam L. (Ashley) Dack, Jerod T. (Stephanie) Dack and Brandon C. (Betsy) Dack and 11 great-grandchildren.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents Anton Hessman and Mary Montgomery, his wife Dola Hessman and lifelong friend Neil Montgomery.
