Doris May Frerichs, 95, of Grant, Neb., passed away Jan. 4, 2018, at the Golden Our’s Convalescent Home in Grant.
Doris was born April 30, 1922, south of Aurora, to Homer and Gertrude (Thornton) Stout as the fifth of eleven children.
At the age of four, Doris and her family moved to Perkins County, eventually settling 15 miles south of Grant in 1940. Doris graduated from Perkins County High School with the class of 1939 and obtained her teacher’s training certificate.
Doris taught rural school for a few years in Perkins and Chase counties. She married Erwin Frerichs on Aug. 27, 1941, and the couple made their home on the Stout family ground, where they farmed, ranched and raised their family.
Doris was a loving mother and dedicated wife. She was a skilled seamstress and viewed sewing and mending as a true labor of love. She altered clothes at Mary Lyon’s dress shop for eight years and also had her own alteration business out of her home for 20 years.
In 2005, Doris entered the Golden Our’s Convalescent Home, where she received excellent care.
Doris grew up in an era that shaped her into a saver. She had a way of repurposing things like scrap fabric that may have been discarded by others. She enjoyed baking, cooking and being a homemaker. She was greatly fulfilled with her lot in life, seeing it as a gift from God.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Erwin; her daughter, Marcia Frazier; brothers, Lyndle, Homer “Russell,” and Donald; sisters, Margaret Daiss, and Dorothy “Jean” Gloy.
