Don Winkelmann

Don Winkelmann, an agricultural and global leader in international agricultural research died Oct. 7, 2020 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
He began his career at UNL graduating with a degree in agricultural economics. After completing the ROTC program there, he served two years in the U.S. Air Force. He received his PHD in ag econ from the University of Minnesota. He then taught at Iowa State University before moving to Mexico City, where he spent the next 27 years. He was appointed Director General of the international maize and wheat improvement center (CIMMYT).
In 1995, he moved to Santa Fe and continued his work with the UN Food and Agricultural Organization.
In 2000, he retired and continued living in Santa Fe.
Don was born July 18, 1931 in Culbertson, Nebraska to A. W. and Ella (Bischoff) Winkelmann.
He is survived by his wife Breege Winkelmann of Santa Fe, New Mexico; three children, Kurt (Janeen) Winkelmann of Portland, Maine, Karen (Paul) Worley of Nashville, Tennesse, Margret (Rodger) Smith of Thousandoaks, England; one sister, Jean (Bob) Hardy of McCook; two brothers Jim Winkelmann of Waukesha, Wisconsin and David Winkelmann of Milfield, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
