Abelardo Hinojosa Sr., age 51, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 12, 2017.
He was born on Aug. 27, 1965 in Harlingen, Texas.  He grew up in Texas but settled in Imperial, Neb., with his wife and children in 1997. He worked as a farm and ranch hand all his life and was currently employed by Dorman “Darty” and Marla Schilke.
He is survived by his wife, Velma; his step-daughter, Laura and husband Jose Luis Co; his three sons, Abelardo Jr. and wife Elisha, Nathan and wife Alysha and Aaron Eli; his mother, Minerva; his siblings Juanita, Julie and husband Manuel Benavidez, Israel Jr. and wife Martha, Javier and wife Norma, Maria (Belen) and Juan Manuel; and six grandsons, Jesus Jr., Michael, Luisito, Juan Emilio, Samuel Chase and Avery.
He was preceded in death by his father, Israel Hinojosa Sr.
Abel Sr.’s greatest pride and joy were his six grandsons.  Spending time with them brought a smile to his face and a joy to his heart.  He was a devoted father and never missed any of his three sons’ sporting events.  We will all miss hearing his booming voice cheering on the Longhorns.
After long wrestling matches, Abel Sr. always made sure Eli was ready for the next day by keeping him hydrated, giving him massages and making sure he got a good night’s rest.  He was also a shade tree mechanic who enjoyed fixing up old vehicles with his sons Abel Jr. and Nathan.
In addition to being an avid fisherman and hunter, he logged endless hours tinkering on various projects; he could build and fix anything. He was a selfless man, always putting others before himself, and will truly be missed by many.
In loving memory of Abelardo Hinojosa Sr. the following services were held: a public viewing at Liewer Funeral Home in Imperial on Friday, July 14; a rosary service at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Imperial on Sunday, July 16; and a funeral Mass on Monday, July 17 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.
The Abelardo Hinojosa Memorial will be designated to a college fund for Aaron Eli Hinojosa, Abel’s youngest son.
