Juniors finish third in District Tournament

    Friday started the Area 7 Jr. Legion District Tournament in Imperial Ne., at Campbell Park. Six teams entered the tournament, with the winner gaining a berth in the Jr. Legion State Tournament.
    In the opening game of the tournament, #1 seed Loomis beat #6 seed Cambridge/Arapahoe, 16-1. #2 seed Gordon/Rushville won the second game over #5 seed Kimball by a score of 15-0.
    In the final game on Friday, #3 seed Imperial beat #4 seeded Bridgeport by a score of 12-9.
    Bridgeport scored two runs in the top of the first inning. The Imperial Horns came back in the bottom of the first and scored five. Bridgeport went down in order in the second inning, while the Horns scored one to lead the game 6-2 after two innings.
    Bridgeport bounced back in the third, scoring four runs and held the Horns to no runs to tie the game at six.
    Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth, before Bridgeport scored three in the top of the sixth to lead 6-9. Imperial came back and scored six in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead 12-9.
    The defense kept Bridgeport from scoring in the seventh to get the win 12-9.
    On Saturday, in the first elimination game of the tournament, Kimball lost to Cambridge/Arapahoe in a high scoring 25-13 ballgame, ending Kimball’s season.
    Loomis beat Bridgeport in the second game of the day, ending the season for the Bridgeport Bombers. In game number three Saturday, the Longhorns fell to Gordon/Rushville by a score of 0-8.
    Gordon/Rushville scored two in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth and two in the sixth, to send the Longhorns into the consolation bracket.
    There were only two games on Sunday, with just four teams remaining. In the first game, Loomis handed Gordon/Rushville their first loss in the tourney, beating them by a score of 8-4, sending Gordon/Rushville to play the winner of the Imperial vs Cambridge/Arapahoe game.
    The Longhorns lost the flip and were visitors in Sunday evenings game.
    The offense got the bats warmed up, scoring four runs in the top of the first. Cambridge/Arapahoe came back scoring two in the bottom half of the inning.
    Imperial kept the offense rolling scoring five in the second, while holding Cambridge/Arapahoe scoreless.
    The Horns added two in the third and another two in the fourth, while only allowing Cambridge/Arapahoe to score one. The game ended with the ten run rule, 13-3, advancing the Horns to Monday’s elimination game against Gordon/Rushville.
    There was only one game on Monday to determine who would play Loomis in the finals. Loomis would have to be beaten twice on Tuesday, since they have yet to lose.
    In a rematch of Saturday’s game with the Imperial Longhorns and the Gordon/Rushville Regulators, the Regulators won the home team advantage.
    In the top of the first, the Longhorns got the first three batters on base, before a pitching change brought Joel Montenez to the mound. Montenez set the next three batters down in order, ending the first inning threat.
    The Regulators scored three in the bottom of the first. Montenez continued to pitch well, holding the Horns scoreless through the first three innings.
    The Regulators scored one in the second and then batted around in the third, scoring seven runs and bringing the score to 0-11.
    The Horns kept fighting, scoring four in the fourth and another two in the fifth. The Regulators added three runs in the fourth, bringing their score to 14.
    The game ended in the middle of the fifth, with the Longhorns down eight runs after five, which ends the game.
    The Longhorns have a very young team and improved all year, showing grit and a never give up attitude. They finish in third place in the Tournament.
    That put Gordon/Rushville into the finals for a rematch with Loomis on Tuesday night, playing for the right to go to the State Tournament. The Regulators would have to beat Loomis twice, with Loomis having no losses going into the game.
