The CCS Longhorn Football team traveled to Holdrege for it’s final game of the season to play the Dusters.
The game had a rough start for the Longhorns when on the second play from scrimmage, a Longhorn pass was tipped and intercepted by the Dusters at the Longhorn 26.
The Longhorn defense was up for the task, holding the Dusters to just one yard in three plays and forcing a field goal attempt which was no good.
The Horns took back over and methodically drove down the field with a good mixture of runs and passes. Jaqueb Hoover capped off the drive with a touchdown run from five yards out. The kick by Brextin  Moreno was good and the Horns led 7-0.
On the ensuing drive for the Dusters, they drove to the Longhorn 34 yard line before a sack on third down forced a punt from the 41.
The first quarter ended on Chase County’s next possession. The Horns were forced to punt, but Holdrege muffed the punt and the Horns recovered at the Holdrege 38.
Two plays later, Tate Hubbard took it in from 30 yards out. The kick was good and the Horns led 14-0.
After a good return, Holdrege started at their own 45 and drove to the Longhorn six yard line, before the Horns defense stiffened and forced the Dusters to kick a 27 yard Field Goal.
The Longhorns drove to the Dusters 46 on the next possession, where they faced a fourth and five. The Horns decided to go for it and handed the ball to Hubbard who went around the right end of the line for a 46 yard touch down. Moreno’s kick was wide right, leaving the score 20-3.
Holdrege moved the ball across mid-field on their next possession, before Hubbard stepped in front of a pass for a pic six. The kick was good and the Horns led 27-3.
The Dusters weren’t done yet, scoring on a 53 yard pass and adding a 23 yard Field Goal before half to make the score 27-12 at the break.
Holdrege got the ball to start the second half. After driving to their own 44 yard line, the Horns forced a punt. The punter mishandled the snap and the Horns recovered at the 26.
Three plays later, Hubbard took the ball around the left end for a 23 yard score. The Horns were successful on the two-point conversion, running Hubbard right up the middle.
That was the end of the scoring for the night, giving the Longhorns their second win of the season, 35-12.
With a record of 2-7, the Longhorns did not make the C-1 playoffs. Three teams that the Longhorns played are included in the 16 team bracket. Sidney is the third seed, Gothenburg the 11th seed and Chadron took the 13th seed.
