Longhorns fall to Cozad, 20-62; looking ahead at Alliance

    Homecoming week didn’t turn out the way that Chase County Schools had hoped.After the Softball and Volleyball Teams had fallen on  Tuesday to Chadron and Sedgwick County respectively, the last chance for success was with the Longhorn Football Team.
    The game started off with a fly-over just before the start. That was followed by the Longhorns receiving the opening kick and Tate Hubbard returning it 95 yards for a touchdown. Brextin Moreno added the extra point kick, putting the Longhorns ahead 7-0, 30 seconds into the game.
    On the Haymakers first possession, the Horns gave up a first down, but after that, forced a punt. The Longhorns went three and out and had to punt into a bit of wind, but got it to the 50 yard line, where Cozad would take over.
    On second and long, Cozad’s QB Julien Davisbroke a tackle for a sack and scrambled about 30 yards down the sideline. After that, the Longhorns couldn’t find a way to stop Cozad.
    Two plays later, the Haymakers scored on a 17 yard pass. The kick failed and the Horns still led 7-6. On the next possession for the Longhorns, they got forced backwards with penalties and sacks, having to punt from the goal line.
    Cozad fielded the ball around the 45 and returned it to the Longhorn 27. Three plays later, the Haymakers scored their second touchdown on a 24 yard pass. Davis ran it in for the two point conversion and the Horns trailed 7-14.
    On the next possession for the Horns, Krayton Paisley was sacked at the five yard line. On the next play, Paisley tried to throw a quick out pass but Cozad’s Oliver Davis stepped in front of the receiver  for a pick six. The kick was good and the Longhorns trailed 7-21 just a minute into the second quarter.
    After the Horns went three and out again, Cozad’s Bryson Snider ran one up the middle and broke it for a 53 yard score. The kick was good and the Haymakers were rolling, 7-28.
    Cozad was able to run two more scores in before the half, to make the score 7-41 at the break.
    The Longhorn defense stiffened in the third quarter, holding the Haymakers to a two yard rushing touchdown.
    The Haymakers scored again early in the fourth on a one yard run, before the Horns put together their first scoring drive. Paisley finished off the scoring drive with a two yard run. The kick by Moreno waqs no good.
    On the ensueing kick, the Haymakers returned it for a 60 yard touchdown. The kick was good. The final score of the night came on a 34 yard pass from Paisley to Hubbard. Moreno’s kick was good, bringing the final score to 20-62.
    Next action for Chase County will be the start of district play against Alliance in Alliance.
    Due to Alliance not being able to secure refs for the night game, the kick-off has been moved up to 2:30 p.m. MT.
