The CCS Longhorn Football Team traveled to Gordon/Rushville Friday Sept. 12 and returned with the first win of the season, 49-30.
The Horns got on the board  with their first possession of the game. Starting on the 35, the Horns pounded the ball on the ground and the Mustangs couldn’t stop them. Tate Hubbard finished the drive, running it in from 18 yards out for the first touchdown of the night. Brextin Moreno added the extra point kick and the Horns led 7-0.
G/R drove down to the Chase County 33 before the Horns stopped them on a fourth down and seven, to get the ball back.
Staying mostly on the ground, the Horns drove down and punched another score in when Hubbard ran in from 5 yards out. Moreno made the kick and the Horns led 14-0. Moreno was 7-7 on extra point attempts for the night.
Gordon/Rushville went to the air on the next drive and found some success. After driving to the Longhorn 10 yard line, G/R QB Johnny Ziller ran it in for a touchdown. Ziller also ran in the two-point conversion to bring the score to 14-8.
The Longhorns were picked off on the next drive deep in Mustang territory. After a three and out by the Mustangs, the Longhorns took over on the G/R 44 yard line.
It didn’t take long for the Horns to score again with Krayton Paisley running in from 14 yards out. On the Mustangs next drive, freshman L. Jurado intercepted a pass, setting up a four yard touchdown pass from Paisley to Hubbard. That brought the score to 28-8 at the half.
The Horns scored again in the third quarter on a one yard run by Paisley and started the fourth quarter with Evan O’Neil running in from 13 yards out, increasing the lead to 42-8. Coach Gaswick pulled his starters after that but the Mustangs weren’t ready to throw in the towel.
The Mustangs went to the air. Numerous snaps went over the head of QB Ziller, but each time he was able to track down the ball and scramble to complete a deep pass. Going against the second stringers, the Mustang offense moved down the field twice in a short time, scoring on touchdown passes of 37 and 88 yards, closing the gap to 42-22.
Coach Gaswick put his first string offense back in to eat some clock, but on the first play from scrimmage, Jaqueb Hoover broke free for a 53 yard score, putting the Horns up 49-22.
Ziller drove down one more time, scoring on a 26 yard TD pass to Daniel Martins. The Horns got the ball back with 2:07 and were able to run out the clock.
