Wood carvings on display at library through end of May

Wood carvings by Dwight Hoff and Bud Stenger will continue to be displayed at the Leid Imperial Library until Friday, May 30.  The idea for this display, which is free to the public, was inspired by a piece in the art collection J. Gordon Christensen donated to the City of Imperial.  To complete the exhibition Chase County Area Arts Council has gathered a collection on loan from descendants of Stenger and Hoff as well as other local area residents.  
 Stenger (1902-1986) took up wood carving at the instigation of his daughter while recovering from injuries sustained by falling from his horse on the family ranch. The Wine Glass Ranch, homesteaded in 1888 by the father of his wife Mary, is still in the family today. Stenger been described as “a rancher with an artist’s soul.”
Hoff (1925-2020), a well-known grocer in Wauneta and Imperial, was inspired by Bud Stenger.  Among his works are old cedar fence posts carved with intricate Native American imagery.  For 20 years, he and his wife, Gladys traveled the regional craft fair circuit with their creations.
