Thirteen-year-old Jeffrey Martin Jr., a seventh-grader at Chase County Schools, is about to take his wrestling career to the next level — and across the globe. Martin, the son of Annie and Jeff Martin, has earned the incredible opportunity to wrestle for Team USA in Serbia this April.
This will be the young athlete’s first time traveling overseas to compete, and it’s a milestone that many local wrestlers dream of. Though Martin has plenty of experience on the mat at local and national competitions, representing his country on an international stage is a whole new adventure.
Before heading to Europe, Martin will travel to Chicago to join his coaches and teammates. Then, he’ll board a plane — his first time flying without his family— and head to Serbia with the rest of Team USA. After competing against some of the toughest young wrestlers in the world, he’ll return home on April 13th.
Martin’s wrestling journey started early, giving him a strong foundation for this exciting opportunity. He first tried the sport in kindergarten and has stuck with it every year since. His dedication has paid off — last year, he placed at state for the first time and qualified for nationals and competed in both Iowa and Tennessee.
Recently, Martin finished strong at the AAU State Tournament in Kearney and the USA Club State Tournament in Grand Island. His impressive performances caught the attention of wrestling scouts, opening the door to tougher competition and a spot on Team USA.
For Martin’s parents, the pride runs deep. “We couldn’t be more proud of him,” said his mom, Annie. “He’s worked so hard to get here, and seeing him represent our country is an incredible honor.”
Of course, an international trip like this comes with costs, and the community is stepping up to help support Martin’s journey. On March 20th, the local Subway in Imperial is hosting a fundraising event from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. During that time, 20% of all sales will be donated toward Martin’s travel expenses.
If you’d like to help this talented young wrestler chase his dreams and represent our country, stop by Subway on March 20th and grab a sandwich for a cause.
