The Chase County Speech team was divided into two groups to compete at different locations on the same day. This past Saturday, the upperclassmen speakers traveled to Minden with Head Coach Alex Schilke to compete at the Minden Whippet Invitational. Those competitors included George Colton, Jesus Juarez, Jasmine Johnson, Andrew Wiest, and Paige Nickless. Meanwhile, Assistant Coach Peyton Rowley took the underclassmen to the Wildcat Invitational, where Colt Majors, Alyssa Schilke, Chloe Colton, and Annabelle Kimball participated in Maxwell.
Much Success was to be awarded to the Chase County Team in Mindin. They brought home a total of eight medals and even a few crowns. Johnson received the sixth-place award in Entertainment Speaking. Wiest claimed the spot of fifth place in Humorous Prose and fourth in Serious Prose. Nickless was awarded twelfth in Humorous Prose. In Persuasive Speaking, Colton received fifth. Being awarded a medal and crown of first place was the Oral Interpretation of Drama members. Those members included G. Colton, Wiest, Nickless, and Juarez. Additionally, Colton was also crowned first place in the event of Serious Prose.
A tradition of the Whippets is to crown event winners with paper Burger King crowns and provide a pair of fun-patterned socks. Chase County brought home five of these crowns–four for OID and one for Colton in Serious Prose. Two Longhorns speakers earned an additional medal for Overall Individual Speaker Points: Colton and Wiest. Colton claimed the second place award, and Wiest was given second. As a team, CCS placed seventh out of 21 teams, with Minden claiming the overall victory.
While the upperclassmen had a successful day, the underclassmen were not as fortunate. They didn’t bring home any medals but received very positive comments from the judges. The events they participated in included Colton and Schilke in Duet Acting, Majors in Poetry, and Kimball in Program of Oral Interpretation.
After another successful weekend, the Longhorns are now preparing for their final meet, Districts, which is set to take place on the 22nd of March in Perkins County. To be able to compete at the state level, the Longhorns must get a top three place individually in their event. After Districts, the qualifying members will travel to Kearny to participate at State. The competition will take place on the 27th of March.
