Statewide primary elections coming up
This year’s primary elections are quickly approaching. On May 14, Nebraska will hold its statewide primary elections. The polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.
There are several polling stations in Chase County. In Imperial, polling stations include, the Lied Imperial Public Library, the Imperial United Methodist Church, and the Imperial Community Center. Wauneta voters should report to the Wauneta Senior Center. In Champion, the designated polling station is the Champion Community Center. If you are unsure of your designated polling station, that information can be found on your Voter Registration Card or by contacting the Chase County Clerk.
There is no need to re-register unless you have moved to a different county. If you do need to re-register, mail-in registration must be postmarked by April 29 and in-person registration must be completed by 5 p.m. on May 3.
If you need to vote early because you cannot vote on May 14, you can vote early in-person at the Chase County Courthouse beginning on April 15. The final day for early in-person voting is May 13.
For those wanting to vote by mail, applications to request a mail-in ballot must be sent in by May 3. Requests for early-voting ballots are not typically denied as Nebraska is considered a “no-excuse” state and does not require a reason for wanting a mail-in ballot. Early Voting ballots are mailed out prior to the election and must be received by 7 p.m. on May 14. They can be sent in the mail or placed in the drop box found at the Courthouse.
It is important to note that whether voting in person or by early-voting ballot, an ID is required. This is new this year and will be a requirement in all future elections in Nebraska.
There will be no local races on the May 14 primary ballot as there are not more than two candidates for any position. All local races will appear on the ballot during the General Election on Nov. 5.
