School year’s final PBIS Students of Month chosen

■ Editor’s note: Chase County Schools staff in cooperation with its Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports team are nominating and selecting Students of the Month during the 2022-23 school year. Students of the Month are nominated by staff members based on positive qualities or actions teachers have observed that go above and beyond the usual expectations. The nominations are reviewed by the PBIS team and two students are picked based on the number of nominations and what was said by the nominators.

Jesusita Ruiz and Mason Tyerman are the April PBIS Students of the Month at Chase County Schools. Their selections are the final ones for the 2022-23 school year.
Ruiz is a senior at CCS, and the daughter of Juan and Monica Ruiz.
CCS first grade teacher Michaela Cochran had this to say about Jesusita: “Jesusita has shown responsibility at a tremendous level this semester in my classroom. Each day she collects student reading bags and checks out books.
“I never have to tell her to do this task, she walks in my room and gets started right away. I am very appreciative of her for taking on this responsibility, as it is one thing I don’t have to worry about getting done before the end of the school day. Jesusita also displays respectfulness when in my first grade classroom.
“As students come back into the room from PE and music, Jesusita always greets them with a smile. She even takes the time to stop what she is doing and have a conversation with them. I know that time she spends talking with those kiddos means the world to them.”
High school business teacher Sandy O’Neil added, “Jesusita is in a class that has to study to take a certification test. She works really hard studying so she can pass and has even been seen helping other students out.”
And, finally, CCS art teacher Chelsea Zuege said, “Jesusita has been so fun to have in class. This year she decided to take art after only taking art as a freshman. She has done a great job with projects. Jesusita interacts with her peers in a positive way and always helps others when needed.”
At CCS, Jesusita has been involved in the multicultural club for two years and softball all four years. She worked at Super Foods for two years and, since 2021, has been working at the nursing home in Imperial as a CNA.
Mason Tyerman is a junior at CCS and is the son of Luke and Allison Tyerman.
CCS kindergarten teacher Arlys Cupp wrote: “Mason is always respectful and helpful in any situation. It doesn’t matter who he is with or where he is, Mason is the same. He works hard at everything he does.
“Leadership roles in organizations are something he doesn’t take lightly. He is successful and works with others to help them be successful as well. He understands the needs of others, both physically and emotionally.”
Another CCS staffer wrote the following: “I appreciate his commitment to excellence in his work. In addition, I love that he is curious and asks high level questions to enhance his learning experience. He always has a bright smile on his face, is funny and enjoys humor. He just brightens up my classroom and my day.”
High school social studies teacher Carl Zuege added, “Mason is a person who other students look to for leadership and encouragement. He is one of the most personable and mature students in our building. He loads his schedule with classes, sports, clubs, performances and his own successful lawn care business, yet he is able to manage all of this and still have time for others. He is an excellent role model for his peers.”
While at CCS, he has participated in cross country and track. He is the president of the FFA for 2023-2024, and he is a member of the blood drive team. He serves as student rep for the Imperial Community Foundation, and he is a member of the Imperial Chamber of Commerce with his Tyerman Turf Care business.
