Cold, wind can’t stop CCS
There wasn’t a whole lot that was fun at the Sutherland Invite Friday. Cold and windy conditions had athletes shucking off sweats and warm ups at the last second then scrambling to put them back on as quickly as possible.
Despite that, the Chase County girls track team picked up a dominant team win at the meet.
CCS beat runner up North Platte 202-66. Head Coach Troy Hauxwell said that’s a lot of points to rack up at a meet that only places six. The Longhorns’ points were enough to beat the next three teams, St. Pat’s, Wallace and Hershey, combined.
“That’s a pretty good day,” Hauxwell said.
Chase County had 1-2 finishes in the 400, Bryn McNair and Riley Rusher, and 800, B. McNair and Miranda Spady.
Ali McNair won the pole vault and B. McNair won the high jump.
Chase County placed three individuals in the 200, 800, 100-meter hurdles and pole vault.
Hauxwell was pleased with the PRs he saw on a day when the weather was poor.
The Longhorns also swept all three relays.
One surprise win was the 400-meter relay. After NPSP ran a fast time last Tuesday, the Longhorns, Hayley Rusher, Ella Colson, A. McNair and Olivia Spady, built enough of a team lead to hold off the Irish and 100-meter champion Mae Siegel down the stretch for the win.
Hauxwell also liked the effort he saw in the other two relays.
CCS, won the 1,600-meter relay by 15 seconds and the 3,200-meter relay by 20 seconds.
“It’s tough when your running by yourself in that kind of weather,” Hauxwell said.
Up next
The Longhorns dominated the competition Tuesday at their home meet. Results will be available in next week’s paper.
CCS will be at Hershey Saturday, then return to Hershey next Friday for the SPVA meet.
Hauxwell said Hershey is looking to add teams to Saturday’s Mike Troxell Invite, but he expects Chase County to see a lot of the same faces.
Also scheduled to attend are SPVA foes Perkins County, NPSP and Sutherland. Arthur County is also on the agenda.
