WP boys to face Wallace in D2-9 first round
With the release of subdistrict pairings by the NSAA Tuesday, the Wauneta-Palisade boys will head to Wallace, a team they beat in their season opener, for the first round of the D2-9 subdistrict.
Tip off will be at 6 p.m. CT Tuesday. Medicine Valley and Brady, the second and third seeds respectively, will follow. The winners will play Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The Broncos’ regular season will wrap up this week with a game at South Platte (6-13) Wednesday and a home contest against Arthur County (5-13) Friday.
WP lost two games last week, starting off with a 37-50 defeat at Cheylin, Kansas Thursday.
The Broncos dug themselves into a 10-point hole with a scoreless first quarter.
Ashton Wheeler got WP on the board in the second quarter and Michael Duvel and Jacksen Littrel joined in with three pointers. Aden Acton added a basket, as well, to send the Broncos to the halftime locker room trailing 10-20.
Wauneta-Palisade continued to keep pace with Cheylin in the second half.
Wheeler hit two three pointers and a two point field goal to score seven of the Broncos 14 third quarter points. Duvel and Littrel each added another field goal and Littrel went 2-2 from the charity stripe.
Wheeler scored a team high 14 points after two baskets in the fourth quarter. Duvel brought his game total to eight points with a three pointer, while Littrel added another basket to give him nine points in the game for the Broncos.
Grayden Sutherland and Kyle Jutten also got their names in the scoring column with fourth quarter buckets.
The task was tougher and taller Friday night against Class D1 No. 2 Maywood/Hayes Center (22-1).
Duvel made the Broncos only first quarter basket and Jutten added one free throw. Wheeler got in on the act in the second quarter, making two 3’s. Jutten also added a field goal, but the Broncos trailed the high-flying Wolves 11-51 at halftime.
WP didn’t make a field goal in the second half and its only points came from two free throws by Wheeler in the 13-71 loss.
Wheeler scored eight points for the Broncos. Jutten totaled three points and Duvel score two points.
