Marjory Ann (Garey) Hanna
Marjory Ann (Garey) Hanna, age 92, of Wauneta, Nebraska passed away at the Prairie Center Living Center in Colby, Kansas on Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022.
She was born to Merlin and Cora (Johnson) Garey on June 1, 1930. She spent her childhood in Edison and talked fondly of delivering papers, collecting eggs and helping her father at the bank, owned by her parents, from a young age as he had lost his sight when she was only a few years old.
Marjory attended the University of Nebraska and received a degree in Business Education. After graduation, she and her best friend Ila (Thone) Widger pooled their money together and went to Europe where they spent the summer touring on bicycles.
After moving to Wauneta for a teaching job, Marjory met Robert (Bob) Hanna. They were married on May 15, 1954 in Edison. The couple settled on the farm on the Stinking Water Creek in Hayes County. To this union were born three children: Michael, David and Nancy. Marjory and Bob were married for more than 53 years before Bob’s passing in 2018.
Marge was a lifelong learner and especially enjoyed the time she spent teaching a multitude of subjects including Business, English, and Journalism in the Wauneta School System for more than 30 years before her retirement in 1991. She was the editor of “Hoofprints” for the Wauneta Breeze as well as sponsor of the school yearbook. She loved teaching and took great joy in seeing the successes of her students both in the classroom and into their future.
Marjory spent over 65 years as an active member of Wauneta Methodist Church serving in a variety of roles for WSCS, teaching Sunday school, and singing in the choir. She served as a Cub Scout leader as well as diligently donating to the Red Cross.
She was deeply appreciative of the community and selflessly served with her time and resources wherever there was a need. She was known for her business expertise and served as an unpaid tax preparer and investment advisor.
After her retirement she spent time enjoying family, friends and life. She made many woven blankets for gifts, was a dedicated letter writer, followed Husker sports, kept up with the daily crosswords, tended to her beautiful buffalo grass yard, flowers, and garden. Marge opened her home warmly and always had the coffee pot on and treats ready to share with family and friends. She enjoyed singing and playing cards and following the various activities of her family and traveled with Bob and a group of long-time friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Merlin and Cora Garey; her in-laws, Forrest and Faye Hanna; her husband Robert; her brother Neal and his wives Jeannine and Joyce; niece Susan and nephew Jeff; brother-in-law Charles and wife Bonnie.
Marjory is survived by her son Mike (Robin) Hanna of Wauneta, son Dave (Cathy) Hanna of Imperial, daughter Nancy (Doug) Munderloh of Colby, Kansas as well as grandchildren Matthew (Tanna) Hanna, Michael (Ashley) Hanna, Hannah (Jared) Callahan, Stephen (Erika) Hanna, Sam (Rebecca) Munderloh, Robert Garrett Hanna and great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Ethan, Benjamin, Lucy, and Griffin Hanna, Charlie, Henry and Maeve Callahan, and Brock and Mattie Munderloh, as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends.
Cremation was chosen and services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Wauneta on Dec. 30 at 11 a.m. Memorials will be given to a Wauneta Palisade graduate for higher education scholarship.
