Longhorns run roughshod over competition

The Chase County girls’ track team overwhelmed the competition Thursday at the Perkins County Pre-Season Meet.
CCS won 14 of the 17 events and was second in the other three.
CCS Head Coach Troy Hauxwell said he gets asked why the Longhorns go to this pre-season meet.
While Hauxwell called the triangular a glorified practice and said it’s great to get everyone on a different track and a chance to run with automatic timing.
With around 40 girls out the meet isn’t about the competition so much as getting a look at athletes in the setting, he said.
Placing first was Jordan Jablonski, 200 meters and pole vault; Bryn McNair, 400 meters and high jump; Olivia Spady, 800 meters; Lucy Spady, 1,600 meters; Jerzee Milner, 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles; Kaylie Lotspeich, shot put and discus; and Liz Reeves, triple jump.
Coaches were able to mix and match athletes in events thanks to unlimited entries. With girls in a variety of events, seniors, juniors and sophomores set 18 personal bests.
Hauxwell said that amount of PRs can be misleading because of the variety of new events some kids were entered in.
Jablonski’s win in the 200-meter dash and Ella Colson’s PR in the 100-meter dash were two performances from returners that stood out for Hauxwell, as well as runs by Peyton Owens, O. Spady and Landree McNair.
With the team at practice number 21 out of 43, Hauxwell was pleased to see athletes ahead of where they were last year at this time.
Hauxwell pointed out Milner in the hurdles, Lotspeich in the throws and Jablonski and Ali McNair in the pole vault.
He also emphasized the growth in throwers Kylie Wiest, Gisselle Acuna, Brooke Schilke and Addie Leibbrandt.
With some question marks in the relays, coaches threw a variety of runners in events to see who stood out.
CCS had six out of the 14 sprinters in the 100-meter dash and took first through seventh in the 200-meter dash. A timing error left an eighth runner with no time.
When the smoke had cleared the Longhorns went 1-2 in the 400-meter relay and 1,600 meter relay, as well as winning the 3,200-meter relay.
The first place 400-meter relay team was made up of Milner, Colson, A. McNair and Jablonski. Finishing one second behind was Adelle Eskew, Tristan Nordhausen, Liz Reeves and Owens.
Members of the 1,600-meter relay teams were, in first place, Jablonski, O. Spady, A. McNair and B. McNair, and, in second place, Owens, Nordhausen, Joee Clevenger and Milner.
Hauxwell said there’s still work ahead for those events.
As always, this Saturday’s Ed Moore Invite in Ogallala will be one of Chase County’s most challenging meets of the season.
Alliance, Chadron, Cozad, Gothenburg, Ogallala and Sidney will be there, along with district competitor Mitchell.
Hauxwell said he’s excited for the meet.
This one sets the tone for the season and gives him an idea of where CCS is at and what direction the team needs to move, Hauxwell said.
“We’re going to move some things around,” Hauxwell said, adding he’s got some ideas about the pieces he has.
“There’s a picture in my mind that’s starting to form a little,” he added.
The next week and a half will be big for his team and Hauxwell said coaches will start trying to lock those pieces in and really get going.
