Chase Co. girls look to ensure post season home court advantage

The Chase County girls’ basketball team is on a four game winning streak after a victory  over North Platte St. Pat’s Friday. CCS has gone 10-1 since the new year began.
The Longhorns held a 10-8 lead halfway through the first quarter against St. Pat’s, but closed out the quarter on an 8-1 run. The lead swelled to 12 in the second quarter. CCS led 28-16 at halftime.
Coach Randy Longoria was pleased with Chase County’s shooting in the first half.
“Our fast break and press break led to easy shots,” he said.
The Irish got off to a strong start in the third quarter and cut the lead to four points, 32-28. Kora Weiss jump started the CCS offense with a three pointer and the Longhorns finished the final three minutes of the third quarter on an 11-3 run to lead 43-31 heading into the fourth quarter.
Longoria said Weiss’ three pointer helped CCS regain some breathing room and the Longhorns were able to maintain some space after the basket.
With the advantage, Chase County was patient. St. Pat’s cut the lead to 45-36, but, with fouls to give, tried fouling with three minutes left in the game. CCS spread the court to make the Irish chase the ball and time quickly ran off the clock in the 49-36 win.
Longoria credited Jordan Jablonski with a tremendous defensive effort in the contest. Jablonski was tasked with shutting down St. Pat’s Tonja Heirigs. Though Heirigs scored a “hard earned” 17 points, Longoria said the Irish had to force the ball to her.
Richmond led the CCS scorers with 19 points and added six rebounds. Bryn McNair scored 13 and tallied seven rebounds.
Despite giving up 17 offensive rebounds, the Longhorns dominated points in the paint, 26-8, and held St. Pat’s to five of 30 two point shots. CCS also had eight blocks.
The combination of Jablonski’s defensive efforts and the blocked shots set the tone for CCS, Longoria said.

On Saturday the Longhorns will be at 11-10 Cambridge.
With CCS leading the C1-11 subdistrict in points, Longoria is planning on the subdistrict tournament being played in Imperial.
“Unless there’s a dramatic change, we will host,” he said, adding that it’s a tremendous advantage for the Longhorns.
“Our floor, our baskets, no travel, it’s an advantage we’ve earned by beating all three teams,” he said.
CCS is joined by Gothenburg, Hershey and Cozad in the C1-11 subdistrict.
