Jerzee Milner beats two Kimball defenders for a reverse layup in Chase County’s first round SPVA win.

Lady Longhorns third at SPVA

The Chase County girls’ basketball team bounced back from a tough loss to Bridgeport in the SPVA semifinals to take third place with a win over North Platte St. Pat’s.
Bridgeport’s full court press and 2-3 zone gave the Longhorns fits throughout Friday’s game. CCS Head Coach Randy Longoria said the Longhorns didn’t see that in the teams’ Dec. 22 game and his team struggled with it.
CCS only made two field goals in the first quarter, a two from Jerzee Milner and a three from Alexis Richmond. Their five point total was matched by Bryn McNair, who made five of eight free throws.
Trailing 10-18 at the end of the first quarter, the Longhorns only scored three points over the first 4:30 of the second quarter. Milner scored the final four points of the half, leaving CCS trailing 20-32 at halftime.
Richmond and McNair scored Chase County’s 13 third quarter points, but no one could stop Bridgeport’s offense which put up 24 points coming out of halftime. Both teams cleared their benches in the 39-70 CCS loss.
McNair scored 19 points to lead the Longhorns.
Before Saturday’s third place game against North Platte St. Pat’s, Longoria reminded his team that they bounced back from a loss before and they needed to do it again.
Only one Irish player, Tonja Heirigs, scored in the first quarter, but she scored nine points. Four Longhorns, Kora Weiss, Jordan Jablonski, Richmond and McNair, scored 11 first quarter points from CCS.
With the Irish playing a triangle and two, focusing on Richmond and McNair, Longoria said two early baskets by Weiss forced St. Pat’s to reevaluate that plan.
From there, everything fell into place, he said.
The game remained close through the remainder of the first half. Heirigs scored six of St. Pat’s nine second quarter points, a total matched by McNair. Milner, Weiss and Richmond also scored before halftime and CCS led 26-21 at the break.
The Longhorns continued to pull away in the second half behind Richmond and McNair. The pair scored all 25 of Chase County’s second half points.
A good defensive effort, CCS held the Irish to three second half field goals, sealed the 51-35 win. Heirigs was held to two points in the second half, and that made the difference, Longoria said.
McNair totaled 24 points and Richmond 16 in the win.
Up next
The Longhorns’ Tuesday game against Haxtun, Colorado was canceled.
Looking ahead, Longoria said there’s still some unknowns on the CCS schedule.
Chase County will travel to Hershey Saturday. Longoria said it’s a huge game considering the power points standings. Longoria wants the win and the points needed for a number one seed in sub districts.
Then comes a Tuesday game next week against Yuma, Colorado.
