W-P third graders connect with postmasters across country
Wauneta-Palisade third graders’ enthusiasm took a jump when an assignment found them connecting with postmasters across the country as part of a letter-writing unit.
Students wrote a letter to the postmaster in a U.S. town that corresponds with either their first or last name.
Marlee Kramer’s letter went to Kramer, North Dakota. The class was in for a big surprise when Kramer Postmaster Mary Gorgi sent two boxes of information about the local area, as well as a hand-knitted stocking cap for Marlee and all her classmates.
In return, the class is putting together a box of thank-you letters and a few items from around the local area, as well as Nebraska-made products. These include pancake mix from the Wauneta Roller Mills, a Prairie Girl candle made in Benkelman, a bottle of Dorothy Lynch salad dressing and packets of Kool-Aid.
“The students are so excited,” said teacher Julie Burrell.
They also decided to handknit Christmas ornament stockings to send to their new North Dakota pen pal.
Other students have enjoyed responses to their letters that came with pamphlets, letters, keychains and pens.
