CCS volleyball team 5th at McCook Tournament

The Chase County volleyball team posted a 2-2 record last week and will remain busy in the days ahead with six games in five days.
CCS opened last week with a trip to Hayes Center to take on the Maywood/Hayes Center Wolves.
Unbeaten MHC is ranked third in Class D2 by the Lincoln Journal Star and fourth by the Omaha World Herald.
Though the Lady Longhorns were swept in the match, CCS competed well with the Wolves.
Getting off to good starts has been a problem, but CCS came out strong against MHC.
Coach April Lambert said her team  served aggressively and knew that they had to attack rather than sit back to wait and see what the other team will do first.
CCS held a 17-13 lead in the first set.
But the Lady Longhorns struggled to contain MHC middle hitter Jaycee Widener throughout the match. The senior swung the momentum back to the Wolves’ side when in the front row.
Unforced errors by CCS helped MHC tie the game at 18, then take a 20-19 lead. The teams traded kills down the stretch as CCS lost the set 22-25.
The Lady Longhorns got off to another good start in the second set, holding a 15-10 lead.
Widener took over once more. Five kills by the Wolves helped MHC go on an eight point run and take the lead. CCS lost the set 21-25.
Lambert made changes to the CCS serving substitutions heading into the third set, and those players were perfect in the set, but it wasn’t enough. The Lady Longhorns led 21-20 but couldn’t close out the set, losing 23-35.
Despite the loss CCS players have adapted to new positions.
“The girls have really settled in to the new roles and the lineup is solid in terms of knowing our positions,” Lambert said.
“They are still getting comfortable with who they are playing next to and what they can rely on one another to do and intuitive things like that.”
Bryn McNair had 12 kills for CCS.
McCook Tournament
CCS opened Saturday’s McCook Tournament with a rematch against Alliance, a team the Lady Longhorns beat in four sets Sept. 10.
The match was a close one.
