Mitchell’s size, speed too much for Longhorns
When the NSAA released the two-year football schedule, Head Coach Nathan Gaswick knew the front end of that schedule would be tough.
The first four games pitted the Class C2 Longhorns against four Class C1 opponents, Mitchell being the last.
They saw big linemen at Chadron in the season opener but it didn’t compare to the size and speed they saw at Mitchell Friday night.
Gaswick said the Longhorns didn’t match up well with Chadron, “but it didn’t hold a candle to what we saw at Mitchell.”
Mitchell took advantage of their size, coupled with quick, speedy backs en route to a 56-8 win over the Longhorns there Friday night.
Going into Friday, Gaswick tweaked the offensive alignment, putting quarterback Ryan Bernhardt in the shotgun to give him more time to react.
Mitchell’s defensive ends crashed hard all night, Gaswick said, so Bernhardt had to make his reads based on them.
After giving up a touchown to Mitchell on their opening drive, the Longhorns threatened with their own drive.
Bernhardt completed passes of 22 and 33 yards to Kade Anderson and Chase Rowley to take the Longhorns to the Mitchell 10.
Two plays later, however, Mitchell picked off a Bernhardt pass.
Mitchell struck two plays later on a 70-yard touchdown run.
The Longhorns moved the ball into Mitchell territory on their next possession but were forced to punt.
Behind their offensive line, Mitchell went 78 yards in eight
