Longhorns take subdistrict title

Despite sickness and injuries, the Longhorns took the subdistrict title last week.
In subdistrict tournament play, the Longhorns, with the No. 1 seed, first played No. 4 Cozad.
“We kind of got off to a slow start against Cozad,” Head Coach Chris Bartels said, “but our defense was solid throughout the whole game.”
The Longhorns pulled down 31 rebounds against the Haymakers, seven of those coming from senior Bennett Bauerle.
Bauerle also led offensively, contributing 20 to the final 59-38 final score.
“Bennett stepped up on offense and got us going from deep with a couple three-pointers in the first quarter,” Bartels said. “It was only a five-point game at half-time, but I knew if we kept the defensive effort up, our shots were going to start falling and we would eventually pull away.”
That’s exactly what happened.
The Longhorns had a 16-point lead after the third quarter and cruised to a 21-point victory.
