Girls win squeaker at Sidney, lose to Ogallala
It was an up and down weekend for the Chase County girls’ varsity team as they head into a week and a half break.
The Lady Longhorns won a squeaker in Sidney Friday by two points, but then lost to a good-shooting Ogallala team Saturday, when one of Chase County’s starters suffered an ankle sprain.
Coach Randy Longoria said it was a bad sprain suffered by sophomore Jordan Jablonski, but he’s hopeful she’ll be back by mid-January, and wants it to have the full time to heal.
Jablonski, who’s been a starter since the season opened, went down with three minutes left in the first quarter as she attempted a three-point shot. As an Ogallala defender backed into her, Jablonski got twisted up and fell to the ground.
Chase County led by as much as 10-2 early in the Ogallala contest, and still led by four, 24-20, at the half.
But, it became a tale of two halves, Longoria said.
“We had trouble finding the basket second half,” he said.
That was after 44% Chase County field goal shooting in the first two quarters. That percentage dropped to 17% second half.
Meanwhile, after Ogallala shot 33% from the field first half, they got better in the second, hitting 46% of their field goal attempts.
Longoria said, sometimes, a team has no control over a night when the offense is off.
However, that’s when the defense needs to step up, and Longoria said his team needed to be more consistent on defense the final two quarters.
“If we hold them to 20-25% shooting, it’s going to be more of a game at the end,” he said.
Mallie McNair scored 23 to lead Chase County on offense. Alexis Richmond and Bryn McNair each had five.
Ogallala’s top scorer was senior Jaedy Commins with 20.
No other stats from the game were available.
