Volunteerism alive and well here

If I hear anyone say there’s been nothing to do in Chase County this month, I’m going to ask them where have they been.
    After the very successful Cattlemen’s Ball held Friday and Saturday between Wauneta and Enders, more than 300 youths are attending SCORE science camps in and around Imperial this week. Then, next Saturday, June 22, Imperial’s Chamber of Commerce will put on the ever-popular fourth annual Smokin’ on Broadway.
    These three major events are all different, and together, will draw thousands of people, many from out-of-town, to our little corner of the world here in Chase County.
        While each event is different, they all have one big thing in common—volunteers.
        I have spoken often in this column over the years about the importance of volunteerism. Events like the Cattlemen’s Ball, SCORE camps and Smokin’ on Broadway would be impossible to organize and put on successfully without the giving nature of volunteers in this area.
    I grew up in Omaha but haven’t been back there to live since high school, so I’m not sure how larger cities like that gauge volunteerism. But out here, I know it’s alive and well. We see it every day in our small communities, and the dedication of volunteers is LARGE.
    So, the next time you are asked to volunteer at the theatre, help at the bloodmobile, take a shift in the Lions bingo stand at fair or usher at church, don’t say no.
    In addition to filling a need, volunteering also feels good. Just see how great you feel next time you say “yes” when asked to volunteer.
