County commissioners look at employee policy on social media

Karen Baker with the Chase County Attorney’s Office attended the Jan. 22 county commissioners’ meeting to question the proposed social media addition to the employee handbook.
Part of new policy says “employees are prohibited from using or accessing social networking sites on County equipment. Employees are also prohibited from using their personal equipment for social networking during working hours.”
Baker said it’s common for her to use social media for child support cases and juvenile services. She also uses personal equipment to contact judges and attorneys and has child support people who call her.
Commissioner Jacci Brown said limiting this type of business wasn’t the intention of the policy.
“What we had in mind was the bad-mouthing part of it,” Commissioner Chuck Vette said.
