Marlin E. Wine
Marlin Emerson Wine, 96, passed away on Dec. 5, 2018, in Lenexa, Kansas.
Marlin was born to David G. and Lottie Keller Wine on Dec. 9, 1921, in a large brick house near Imperial, Nebraska. He was the twelfth of 13 children, all of whom played musical instruments in the “family band.”
Marlin graduated from Chase County High School in Imperial. During his sophomore year, he rode a one speed bicycle to school 13 miles away, missing only four days of school that year. Marlin continued to ride a bicycle into his 90s, choosing to stop only so that others wouldn’t worry about him.
Marlin spent most of his life farming in Chase County, except for four years during World War II when he was drafted into Civilian Public Service. His service included forestry work and being a caregiver in a mental hospital.
Marlin married Lois Frantz on Oct. 6, 1951, and they shared 67 years of love and happiness, as well as the raising of two children.
He was a life-long member of The Church of the Brethren and served as deacon and moderator of the Enders, congregation for many years. After moving to the Kansas City area in 2005, he greatly enjoyed the faith and fellowship of the Olathe Church of the Brethren in Olathe, Kansas.
Marlin is remembered for his contagious smile and good humor. He enjoyed hiking, biking, reading, music, Nebraska football, paint by number pictures and jigsaw puzzles.
He was preceded in death by his parents David G. and Lottie Wine; brothers Glen, Lee, Newell, Gerald and Ronald; sisters Blanch VanDyke, Lois Oltman, Leta Smith, Virginia Jensen, Eunice Trowbridge, Vesta Wine and Nadine Warnke.
Survivors include his wife, Lois, of Lenexa, Kansas; son David (Sharon) Wine of Lenexa, Kansas; daughter Marlene (George) Wine Chase of Kansas City, Missouri; granddaughters Jennifer (David) Pieper and great-grandson, Jack, of Lenexa, Kansas, Tiffany (Dan) Jones and great-grandsons Porter and Keller of Roeland Park, Kansas, Shannon (Cody) Krueger and great-grandsons, Samuel and Wade, of Abilene, Kansas; and grandson Brant (Jaimee) Hartenstein and great-granddaughter, Braylea, of Warrensburg, Missouri. He is also survived by many well-loved nieces and nephews and their families.
A celebration of life service was held at the Olathe Church of the Brethren on Dec. 9 (which would have been Marlin’s 97th birthday).
The family is planning a future gathering of friends and family in the Chase County area to share stories and memories.
