Boys, girls cross country teams win DCS titles

“It was a good day for us.”
That’s how cross country Coach Carl Zuege summed up the Longhorns’ performances at the Dundy County Stratton meet.
On the heels of the girls taking the team title with just 12 points, the boys doubled up the effort, winning the boys’ title by two points over Cambridge and Dundy.
Zuege said that shows just how important all five of the runners are when it comes to team scoring.
In the girls’ division, the Longhorns claimed eight of the meet’s 15 medals awarded.
Maddie Brown, Riley Owens and Macy Coleman finished second, third and fourth behind DCS’s Sable Lambley. With Brooklyn Christensen in seventh, the Longhorns sewed up the title.
From there, the Longhorns claimed ninth, 11th, 12th and 15th.
Zuege said Owens ran especially well in her third-place effort.
He said this was a good confidence booster for the girls with the conference meet next week and districts the week after.
On the boys’ side, they captured the title for the first time in several years, having finished behind DCS.
Based on how his team finished, Zuege thought they had a shot at the title but knew the scoring would be tight. It was a nice surprise to hear DCS announced in second, meaning the Longhorns won the meet.
