Photo at Arlington Cemetery judged Best of Show in county fair’s contest

A photo capturing the stillness of Arlington Cemetery was the judges’ choice for Best of Show in the 2018 Chase County Fair Open Photo Contest.
The Best of Show winner and top photos in four categories were announced Monday by contest chairman Samie Johnson.
Rhonda Smith of Champion submitted the Best of Show winner of the Arlington, Virginia landmark, which also won the “Patriotic” category.
Johnson said this year two of the three judges picked the same Best of Show photo so that made figuring out the winner easy. Judges were asked simply to pick which photo they liked best, she said.
Other categories this year included Bliss, People On Phones and Rain.
This year’s entries, 42 in all, will be on display at the Chase County Fair in the 4-H/open class exhibit building.
Johnson noted that judging was changed last year and now resembles how the Chase County Hospital and Clinic conducts its annual photo contest, awarding points from 1-10 in specific areas. Each photo could earn a high score of 30 points from each of three judges.
Photos were judged on visual appeal and composition, degree to which photograph relates to category, originality and creativity.
Johnson said she was pleased with the increase in participation with 42 entries compared to 22 last year.
Best of Show winner will receive $50, while the first, second and third in each category will receive $40, $30 and $20.
The “Bliss” category had the most entries with 17, while “Rain” drew 15 entries. Six photos were entered in “Patriotic” and four in “People on Phones.”
Johnson said the 2019 fair contest categories have already been chosen and will be: Green With Envy, Loving Life, Unforgettable Faces and Vintage.
“We are also looking to put on a photo contest for professionals in 2020. The subject photo will have to have been taken during the Chase County Fair,” Johnson noted.
One photo from any professional photographer with their business card and $10 entry fee will be required in the professional division.
