What started off as making unique and personalized items for family and friends has turned into another business for Jason and Heidi Anderson.
So 5 Star Metal was born.
The Andersons create custom and stock metal signs in their shop near Enders.
Jason’s uncle owns 28 Big R Stores throughout Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.
“He brought up the idea to carry some of this stuff in his stores,” Jason said. “That’s how it all got started.”
The Andersons have purposely not done a lot of advertising for their new business.
“We didn’t want to get overwhelmed so quickly that we couldn’t keep up,” Jason said.
While they do have stock pieces available at stores like Owens’ True Value and Ace Hardware in Ogallala, Heidi is kept busy with daily custom work.
“People will see stock stuff and call and say ‘I like that, but can you do this?’” Jason said.
They’ve recently started using a fiber laser engraver, which can do designs on items like Yeti cups, cutting boards and glassware.
“I’ve been doing a lot of wedding gifts this summer,” Heidi said.
“We’ll just put their last name on something. It’s something unique that you can’t find in a store,” Jason added.
Out of Jason’s uncle’s 28 stores, only five of them are currently carrying work from 5 Star Metal.
“We’re still a little Ma And Pa Shop,” Jason said. “We could go out and spend half a million dollars for 10 employees and 10 new machines, or just keep plugging along the way we are. I think the plan for now is letting it run real slow and keep the quality (of the work) up,” he added.
