Museum program to focus on history of county churches

    Chase County Museum is hosting a program Sunday on Chase County churches.
    Charley Colton, Chase County Historical Society President, said he will be giving information about the churches in the county, both in the communities and rural locations since the late 1800s.
    “Many churches in the past were located in the country and were often used as both a church and a school,” he explained.
    He said they will be showing pictures of churches, including photos of long-ago churches that are no longer standing.
    The information being presented will build from stories about churches provided by area families, Colton said.
    “People’s stories are invaluable, and they give great insight into what life was like when those churches were in use,” he added.
    An example was a church that once stood in the Crete community where the cemetery is still there.
    Another rural church that once provided a gathering place was in the Blanche community.
    “I hope to spend the afternoon sharing stories of the past surrounding the churches and the people of the time. I would like to see people bring any items or photos they can share to help better tell the story of the early churches,” Colton said.
    These churches are a part of the history of Chase County and the families who lived here.
    The museum is open Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m, and the program will begin around 2 p.m.
