Kristin Schueler, Randy Vlasin earn college’s ‘influential teacher’ recognition

A Chase County senior and his “most influential teacher” were honored recently by McCook Community College (MCC) as members of the college’s first ever Academic All-Star Team.
Caine Haarberg, who graduated last week from Chase County Schools, was one of 12 area students named to the MCC 2018 Academic All-Star team and so was his teacher Kristen Schueler, who was his “most influential teacher.”
Also, Randy Vlasin of Imperial was honored as the most influential teacher for Hayes Center graduate Wesley Wach.
Because of scheduling conflicts, neither Caine nor Mrs. Schueler were able to attend the honor banquet last week on the MCC campus.
“You are the first group to receive this award from McCook Community College.  Parents and friends—you are to be congratulated as well,” said Mid-Plains Community College President Ryan Purdy.         “Influential teachers—it’s truly an honor to recognize you as well,” he said.
Haarberg of Imperial graduated with a 4.0 grade point average and was ranked first in his graduating class.
In his application for the Academic All-Star Team, Haarberg wrote that he is fulfilled by his involvement with youth sports programs. He believes that seeing adults do acts of community service or taking an interest in youths is what inspired him to be active in his community as well.
“I also enjoy helping people and making people smile. It makes me happy when I can help someone, and I think that’s a huge contributor to my decision in going into the medical field,” he said.
In his academic career he said he always strived to do the best he could.
“I put a lot of effort into my schooling because I know that a good education can open a lot of doors for your future career,” he said.
