Pair of quilters featured this Sunday at museum opening

    It’s a tradition at the Chase County Museum each Mother’s Day to feature quilters as the museum opens for the season.
    That day arrives on Sunday, and this year two members of the Crazy Quilt Guild will be featured—Becky Carman and Carolyn Lee, both of Imperial.
    Between the two of them, they will display more than 30 quilts and wall hangings they have created. In addition, there will be multiple other quilts from Guild members and any others who would like to display a quilt or quilted piece.
    Both Carman and Lee believe quilting is therapeutic.
    “Quilting is an art, patterns and colors,” Carman said. “Putting together your patterns and colors is creative. I’ve had some bombs, but so many of them I really love.”
    Lee learned at a quilt seminar that instead of hoarding quilts in a closet, quilters should consider giving a quilt away each year. She’s been trying to do that.
    “Quilts need to be used and loved,” she said.
    Carman has been quilting almost 30 years. Because of her love of old antiques, she started putting together quilt tops. Saying she wasn’t too successful in the beginning, she took several of Bea Bauerle’s classes.
    She still has about 50 quilts on hand after giving several away. Her favorites are crazy quilts, those made out of satin and velvet with embroidery and embellishments.
    Both also enjoy completing quilts others have started.
