Fourth graders accept city’s 33rd Tree City USA recognition

Monday’s Imperial city council meeting opened with a youthful tone as three fourth graders from Chase County Schools reported on their experiences accepting the city’s Tree City USA award in April.
Anna Aragon, Jackson Cyboron and Odessa Zadina represented the city this year. The youths said they were the only community there represented by people their age.
Each reported on their experiences accepting the award in York, a change from previous years. City Clerk/Administrator Jo Leyland said the state changed its ceremony, offering honored communities to attend ceremonies in one of two sites—North Platte or York.
By attending the program in York, students and their parent/sponsors could still take in activities in Lincoln, too.
In Lincoln, the youths enjoyed visiting Morrill Hall, the planetarium, Paint Yourself Silly in the Haymarket, the Capitol and children’s zoo. At the Capitol, they had a personal meeting with Lt. Gov. Mike Foley.
After reading their essays Monday, the students showed some photos and presented Mayor Dwight Coleman with the city’s 33rd Tree City USA flag.
The students also had the chance to read their essays in  front of their fourth grade peers at the city’s annual Arbor Day program at CCS on April  27.
Jayme Gittlein was a runner-up in the Tree City USA essay writing.
