Cast practicing hard for one-act play contests

Fine-tuning is underway for the Chase County Schools’ entry in next week’s SPVA Conference one-act play competition.
“The Room,” a dramatic play with some comedy threaded throughout, includes a cast of 13 high school students.
They’ll compete in the SPVA contest Monday in Bridgeport, said Shasta Hilker, who’s directing the production with Carolina Ramos.
Hilker said all of the cast members are teens with some type of life problem. The “room” is a refuge, an undefined space with no pressure from the outside world.
But, how long do they need to feel safe before stepping out into the real world? As the play unfolds, each character must make that decision themselves.
Hilker noted that while the play has some serious themes, the humor, realistic characters and conflicts will also hold the audience’s interest.
“The Room” emphasizes a lot of character development, and much of that is left to the individual actors to fill in personality, background and motivation.
Lead cast members include Gabrielle Krutsinger as Cherelle; Tegan Towns, Sandi; Kheren Guillen, Alex; Valerie Herbert, Jennifer; Giovanna Welsh, Ben (playing a boy); Sadie Peterson, Jeff (playing a boy); Noah Griffin, Tony; and Nike Smith as Jon.
Other extras in the cast are Megan Baird, Jorja Dannar, Halle Fiedler, Yubia Ramirez and Mackenzie Soltis.
