Good turnout for Red Cross Bloodmobile at CCS

Chase County Schools hosted the Red Cross Bloodmobile Monday in the new auxiliary gym.
Angie Paisley, CCS school nurse, said they didn’t quite meet their goal of 100 units, but she knew the numbers might be affected by harvest and illness in the community.
“I’m still very happy with the outcome,” she said.
Paisley said they received 85 total units from 79 donors. She was excited to add they had two new donors, one from the community and one student.
Of the 79 donors, 13 were double reds. One of the double red donors was Lyndon Mock, cheerfully donating life-giving blood for the cause.
Red Cross worker Denice Haremza explained the procedure for obtaining double reds.
“The donor’s blood is drawn from their arm and goes through a special machine which separates two units of red blood cells from the plasma. The plasma and platelets are combined with saline and returned to the donor through the same arm,” said Haremza.
This procedure is repeated a second time for each double red donor, she added.
The process takes about 30 minutes longer than regular whole blood donations. Double red donors must also meet certain criteria for this type of donation.
Checking in blood donors were CCS seniors Kayla Schilke, Jace Clevenger and Ryelee Christensen.
The “canteen” table was manned by Paisley and Mary Wilson, providing juice and snacks for the donors after giving blood.
Paisley said she was very appreciative  to the community for their support to the bloodmobile and the subsequent contribution to the students’ scholarship program.
