Veterans Day activities will honor local heroes

Local residents who want to thank a veteran or attend a special Veterans Day program have several opportunities this week.
Veterans Day officially falls on Saturday this year, but local events have been planned for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, according to organizers.
On Friday, veterans will be special guests at a pair of programs at Chase County Schools being planned by the Future Business Leaders of American (FBLA) chapter.
U.S. Marine veteran Eric Gonzalez of Imperial will be guest speaker at the two school Veterans Day programs, one at 10:30 a.m. for grades 5-12 and another at 12:30 p.m. for K-4 students.
Veterans of the area are also being invited to eat lunch that day at the school. FBLA sponsor Sandy O’Neil can be contacted for details.
Later on Friday, starting at 2:30 p.m., a Veterans Day program is planned at Imperial Manor/Parkview Heights.
There are 15 U.S. veterans living at the senior care facilities, and they will be the center of attention that afternoon.
Activities Director Karen Beveridge said all veterans of the area and their families are invited for the program which will also feature Gonzalez as speaker. The VFW Color Guard will also present the colors.
Cookies and coffee will be served, Beveridge said. She encourages people to come visit and share stories with their resident veterans.
