Longhorns cruise to 39-0 win over Kimball

The Longhorns of Chase County stampeded the winless Longhorns of Kimball Friday night, rolling to a 39-0 victory.
The Longhorns put up a 20-0 lead with four minutes left in the first quarter, scoring on three of their first four possessions.
The Longhorns even had one touchdown called back early in the second quarter before tacking on four more before half.
One good thing to come out of Friday’s win, Coach Dan Lenners said, was the opportunity to get his younger players some varsity playing experience.
“Our young kids got a lot of reps,” he said, noting they moved the ball on offense and made two goal line stands against Kimball’s varsity.         With a 39-0 lead going into the second half, the rest of the game was played under a running clock. In 11-man, once a team gets ahead by 35 in the second half, the clock begins to run.
District play begins Friday
The intensity turns up a notch starting this week when the Longhorns begin district play.
A sweep of the district ensures the Longhorns an automatic berth in the 16-team C1 playoffs.
That quest begins Friday when the Longhorns travel to Ogallala, who also comes into the game at 2-2 like the Longhorns.
Lenners said a new coach has taken over the Ogallala program this year.
They like to mix up the run and pass and use a variety of formations to keep a team guessing what they may do.
They have both sides of the line back this year and while their skill players may be younger, they’re getting better as the season progresses, Lenner said.
    “We’ll have our hands full.”
Game time Friday at Ogallala is set for 7 p.m. MT.
Kimball no match for ’Horns
Friday’s matchup was completely dominated by the Chase County Longhorns.
The Longhorns punted away, on their first possession and only had to punt one more time in the first half.
They responded by scoring  on their next three possessions.
Kimball fumbled the ball away on their second possession with the Longhorns recovering at the Kimball 1.
Evan Fisher added the first score with a one-yard carry for a 6-0 lead after the PAT kick was no good.
After another three-and-out, the Longhorns got right back on the board again when Scott Wheeler returned the ensuing punt 61 yards for the score. A two-point conversion gave the Longhorns a 14-0 lead with 6:34 left in the first quarter.
After another three-and-out, Wheeler returned the punt to the Kimball 41. A 15-yarder against Kimball moved the ball to the 24.
