Softball team still looking for consistency

While Chase County’s softball team has strung together some good innings of play, more consistency is needed to win games, said Coach Denise Smith.
The team played six games the past week and couldn’t put together a win. However, Coach Smith said they continue to work on the basic skills of fielding, practicing a lot on grounders and fly balls.
In some of their games the past week, the Lady Longhorns committed a lot of errors in those areas.
“We do well on those in practice but then we have to transfer it to our games,” she said.
That will come with more experience, she said.
This week, the team held a 3-21 record with another busy week of games and just two weeks until districts.
Today (Thursday) Chase County will be in Ogallala for the Gothenburg Tournament. Eight teams will take part, with each playing a pair of games. Chase County’s first game is set for 3 p.m.
On Monday, McCook will be in Imperial for a pair of JV games starting at 4 p.m. Coach Smith said, due to numbers, most of her varsity team will play, but many will be at different positions.
Chase County will round out its regular season Sept. 30 at a triangular in Alliance.
Gering games
While she said the scores don’t reflect it, Coach Smith said her team played better games Sept. 12 against Gering than they did at the Scottsbluff tourney.
    Scores were 1-12 and 1-15.
In the opener, it looked like a good start in the top of the first as Gering’s first two batters were thrown out on grounders, but with two outs, they strung together four hits and put up four runs.
Chase County put its only run across in the third on a fielder’s choice, scoring Lauren Gockley who had reached on an error. Gering scored in each of the remaining four innings except one to take the 12-1 win.
Recording hits were Andrea Page, two singles; and individual singles from Gockley and Ashlie Benge.
On the mound, Sydney Vetter struck out one, walked six and gave up 11 hits in five innings of work.
