Sr. Legions goes 1-2 in district tournament

Imperial’s Senior Legion team saw their season come to an end Sunday in their third game of the Class C Area 7 district tournament in Overton.
The seniors opened the tournament Friday, July 21 against Bridgeport.
They suffered an 8-7 loss that put them into the playback bracket.
There, they faced Curtis Maywood on Saturday, advancing with a 12-4 win.
Sunday, Ainsworth ended the seniors’ hopes for a state tournament berth, 14-4.
This year’s senior team included just four senior players. The balance of the team was comprised of players from the junior team.
Legion rules allow juniors to participate in both the junior and senior district tournaments.
The seniors finish the season with a 6-13 mark.
Bridgeport
After giving up a run to Bridgeport in the top of the first, the seniors answered with three runs of their own.
Leadoff hitter Will Kuenne reached base on an error, stole second and scored on a base hit by Bryce Zuege.
Zuege advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and third on a single by Carlos Chavez.
Both Zuege and Chavez scored to give Imperial a 3-1 advantage. However, the seniors  left bases loaded after getting three consecutive walks.
Over the next three innings,     pitcher Duncan Rector gave up just two hits and struck out four to keep the 3-1 lead.
Rector helped his own cause when he jacked a home run in the bottom of the fourth to give Imperial a 4-1 lead.
After a scoreless fifth, Bridgeport scored three and left bases loaded when Imperial was able to get out of the top of the sixth with the game tied 4-4.
Imperial went down in order in the bottom half of the inning and Bridgeport continued to rally into the top of the seventh.
Bridgeport’s first four hitters got on base and scored. Again, Imperial escaped with bases loaded to set up a rally in the bottom of the seventh.
Noah Griffin led off with a base hit, followed by another hit from Kuenne.
Zuege reached on a fielder’s choice and scored Griffin. Kuenne scored on a passed ball, Trevor Peterson reached first on a walk and  Zuege came home on a fielder’s choice by Nolan Spady.
That brought Imperial within one with runners on second and third. Unfortunately, a pair of strikeouts ended the game and sent Imperial to playback bracket.
