Flooring going down in new gym addition; hoops, bleachers next

Open house in plans for later this summer

On Friday, the flooring was being installed in the new gym addition being built at Chase County Schools.
That, and the installation of the basketball hoops and bleachers, are the main items left to finish in the $3.389 million addition on the school’s northeast side.
The rest of the addition including a wrestling practice area, lockerrooms, restrooms and storage, is finished with the exception of a few punch list items, according to School Supt. Joey Lefdal.
One of the delays in completion of the gym was an issue with humidity in the concrete, Lefdal said, which was not at the level it needed to be before the floor was laid.
That delayed progress in the gym a few weeks, Lefdal said.
Work on the 85 x 93-foot floor finally started last Wednesday by a crew with Dynamic Sports Construction of Leander, Texas.
Last week, Chester McCown and Zon Gibbs were busy trimming and sealing a section of the DynaCourt vinyl flooring which they both touted for its maintenance-free features. McCown noted the floor will need no other maintenance than cleaning for 15 to 20 years.
That will alleviate the cost of the annual resurfacing required on the wood floors in the school’s other two gyms.
Lefdal also likes the quality and maintenance-free aspects.
He noted when the floor is cleaned it returns to its original surface quality.
“It’s going to get a lot of use,” Lefdal said, “and it’s going to be easy to care for.”
On Monday, the floor was about two-thirds down. Painting of the lines will follow. Lefdal expects it to be finished by the week’s end at the latest.
After that’s completed, the hoops will be installed followed by the bleachers on the west end to seat 400-plus.
Lefdal expects the gym work to be completed by the end of June.
