Larry Munger retires after 45 years of teaching science

    Chase County Schools (CCS)  has experienced several changes in all areas this past year. One of the changes in the teacher department is the retirement of Larry Munger.
    For the last 38 years, 9-12 science has been taught by Munger. He has taught biology, earth science, physics and advanced biology, otherwise known as human physiology.
    Originally from the sandhills in the Gordon and Alliance area, Munger taught at North Platte Saint Patrick’s for seven years before making his way to CCS.
    His years of teaching add up to a total of 45 years.
    Munger received his undergraduate degree at Chadron State College and his masters at the University of Nebraska Kearney.    
    His interest in both science and teaching originated in his teens.
    “I had a really good science teacher in high school that pointed me in the science direction,” said Munger.
    Not only has Munger taught students in a classroom setting, but he has also had roles as golf coach and school bus driver.
    By law in the state of Nebraska for retirement, Munger can have no ties with the school for 180 days. After the allotted time passes, he plans on continuing helping out CCS by driving a bus when needed.
    When the school was built 26 years ago, Munger was the president of the Imperial Arboretum Committee. With the help of several generous donations, grants and community members, Munger and the committee of seven landscaped, planted and maintained the school grounds for several years.
    The committee dissolved after several years, although Munger was unsure of an official date.
