Both West teams win in annual CSO all-star clash

Both of the West teams in Friday’s Cambridge Community School Organization (CSO) all-star basketball games in McCook took the win, one game coming down to a last-second basket.
Three Chase County graduating seniors and Lady Longhorn Coach Mark Bottom were involved in this year’s games, moved this year to McCook from Cambridge.
Both Destiny Reinke and Taylin McNair were instrumental in the final minutes of the West Team’s 67-65 win.
McNair grabbed an offensive rebound with a minute left in the game and scored. The East Team answered, but Reinke got the ball on the West’s possession and also scored.
Again, the East Team put up a two-pointer, and with just a few seconds left, Aubrey Frederick of Dundy Co. Stratton hit a bucket for the two-point victory.
Reinke finished with seven points in the game, coming on three baskets and a free throw. McNair scored five, hitting a trey first quarter and her fourth quarter bucket.
Frederick, who finished with 11 points, was named Most Valuable Player for the West. The West’s leading scorer was Riley Nitsch of NP St. Pat’s, who scored 15 on five three-pointers.
Scoring leaders for the East Team were Jacee Pfeifer of Holdrege, 15, and Alea Shaner of Cambridge, 13.
Coach Bottom, who was a West co-coach, said he had a really good group of athletes to work with, and enjoyed working with co-coach Jason Gunderson of Sutherland.
