Imperial bubbling with pride over track championship

Everyone held high expectations that this year’s team could pull off a repeat.

Pride is bubbling all over Imperial as well as all those who claim the Chase County Longhorns as theirs. For the second year in a row, the Lady Longhorns won the Class C track championship over the weekend.
It proved to be another magical weekend for the Lady Longhorns as they backed up last year’s accomplishment with another state championship trophy.
Girls Coach Troy Hauxwell said this year’s championship was truly a team effort. Unlike last year, he noted they did it without any individual first-place finishes.
That team effort couldn’t be any better exemplified than by the 400, 1600 and 3200 meter relays, who combined to capture golds in each event.
The girls completed a rare feat—sweeping all three relays. Only once in the past 20 years of state track history has that feat been accomplished. The last school to do that was Arnold back in 2005.
Everyone held high expectations that this year’s team could pull off a repeat. But a lot of things can happen—a false start, a dropped baton, sickness, injury.
Hauxwell admits it takes some luck to win a state meet and everything has fallen into place for the Longhorns the last two years.
He told his girls to take great pride in their accomplishment of back-to-back state titles.
